November 24, 2013: Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King
Readings- 2 Sm 5:1-3 Israel: "You led us, and God told you, 'You shall shepherd my people and be commander.'" Elders anointed David king of Israel.
- Ps 122:1-5 "Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord."
- Col 1:12-20 God made you fit to share the saints' inheritance, delivered us from darkness to his Son's kingdom. Christ is the image of God, in whom all was created. He's firstborn from the dead, head of the church; he made peace by the blood of his cross.
- Lk 23:35-43 Rulers jeered, "Jesus saved others, let him save himself if he's God's Anointed. "Good thief" on cross: "He's done nothing criminal. Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
- Pope Francis homily: Year of Faith ends today. Our journey of faith begins with Baptism, involves purification and sanctification, ends with full encounter with God. Christ is center of creation [2nd reading], his people [1st reading], and history [gospel]. We must make Christ central in our thoughts, words, and works. When there's a different center, harm results.
Israel sought in a king a God who would be close, accompany them, and be a brother. Christ, descendant of David, is the “brother,” caring for us. We're united with him and share a single journey. To him we can bring our joys, hopes, sorrows, and troubles. When he's center, light shines and he gives hope. The thief who repents begs, “Remember me,” and Jesus forgives him. When anyone asks for forgiveness, the Lord listens. God grants more than what he's asked!
- Pope welcoming catechumens: Keep your desire for God alive, your yearning to encounter the Lord and experience his love and mercy! Faith gives us certainty of Jesus’ presence in every situation. Enter more deeply into God’s love.
- Creighton: Gospel jeers (“He saved others; let Him save Himself”) ironic since he saved others by not saving himself. This King invites a relational response. Don't condemn yourself whom he saved.
- RC.net: Jesus came to conquer hearts, not lands; his kingdom is of love, justice, and peace. Do I recognize Christ as my King and submit to him?
- St. Ignatius' Call of the King: Prayerful Meditation by Fr. Mark Link, text from the Spiritual Exercises
- Marian retreat, day 20, per Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta: Albanian besa: faith, word of honor, keeping my promise. Covenant is exchange of persons, not goods.
- Universalis: St. Andrew Dũng-Lạc and Companions, Vietnamese martyrs
