November 12, 2013: St. Josaphat, bishop and martyr
Readings- Wis 2:23-3:9 God formed man to be imperishable, in the divine nature. Death entered the world, but the souls of the just are in God's hands. They're in peace and shall be blessed. Proved as gold in the furnace, they'll shine, and Lord shall be their King forever.
- Ps 34:2-3, 16-19 "I will bless the Lord at all times." The Lord has eyes and ears for the just, rescues them, is close to the brokenhearted.
- Lk 17:7-10 Servant to master: "We've just done our duty.”
Reflections
- Pope Francis homily: God’s hands, wounded from love, created us, accompany us, caress us in moments of pain, heal us, never abandon or slap. Entrust self to God as child puts hand into father's.
- Creighton: Attitude of service can change our lives. Put others' needs first.
- RC.net: Who can satisfy the claims of sacrificial, generous, selfless love? Does God's love compel me to give my best?
- Universalis: St. Josaphat, Ruthenian/Roman reconciler
- Marian retreat, day 8, first day per St. Maximilan Kolbe: Purity of soul and body prepared him for martyrdom. Purity of Intention: direct thoughts, words, and actions to God, doing everything out of love for God. Mary, help us grow in holiness.
Music
- Justorum Animæ/ Stanford (1st reading)
- "Eyeball" tie pin: Lord has eyes for the just (psalm)
- Red shirt: martyrdom of St. Josaphat
