November 18, 2013: Monday, 33rd week, Ordinary Time
Readings- 1 Mc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63 King Antiochus Epiphanes ordered idolatry and burning of law. Many in Israel refused and were killed.
- Ps 119:53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158 "Give me life, O Lord, and I will do your commands." The wicked forsake your law and ensnare and attack me; redeem me from their oppression.
- Lk 18:35-43 Blind beggar / Jesus: “Have pity on me!” “What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, let me see.” “See; your faith has saved you.” Beggar followed Jesus; all praised God.
- Pope Francis homily: Today people negotiate their fidelity to the Lord, their identity, their belonging to a people God loves. Lord, help me recognize the subtle worldliness that leads us to negotiate our values, faith, and loyalty to our ever-faithful God: apostasy, a form of adultery. Resist hegemonic “globalized uniformity” (vs. true unity), wanting to be like everyone else. God waits for us, loves us, forgives us.
- Creighton: Beggar seized moment, called persistently, was healed. How can I be persistent? How can my faith testify to others? Am I sometimes like the crowd trying to silence the beggar? Am I faithful despite opposition?
- RC.net: Jesus heals blindness of body, mind, and heart. Do I recognize my need and seek Jesus out, trusting in his goodness and mercy? Do I give glory to God for eyes of faith?
- Marian retreat, day 14, per St. Maximilan Kolbe: Max's prayer to Mary, Immaculata, Mediatrix: God entrusted the order of mercy to you. Take me, repentant sinner, and make of me whatever most pleases you.
