November 23, 2013: Saturday, 33rd week, Ordinary Time
Readings- 1 Mc 6:1-13 King Antiochus tries to pillage rich Elymais, retreats when city rises up, hears he lost in Judah, takes to his bed, tells friends his evils are to blame, grieves.
- Ps 9:2-4, 6, 16, 19 "I will rejoice in your salvation, O Lord" who rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked. The needy shall not be forgotten.
- Lk 20:27-40 Sadducees: “Whose wife will the childless woman be?” Jesus: “The risen don't marry. God is of the living; to him all are alive.”
Reflections
- Pope Francis to victims of Typhoon Haiyan: In moments of suffering, ask 'Why?' like children do; maybe it's the best prayer. You'll attract the Father's tenderness. When children ask why, they're really asking for love; we should be like them during tragedies.
- Pope Francis at healthcare conference: Care with dignity and freedom. When people's cognition is reduced or lost, they remain spiritual, so accompany them pastorally so their dialogue with God doesn't break off. Elderly people, live as witnesses of the Lord wherever you are, making Gospel known.
- Pope Francis at Festival of Catholic Social Doctrine: Society is in jeopardy unless we can value the young's energy and the elderly's wisdom. Solidarity with the weak and the unemployed is central to Church social teaching which contains a mystical vision of justice, equality, and development for all.
- Creighton: God—of the living, of life—is at work, calling us, now. We're alive with Christ, not just in the resurrection, but today.
- RC.net: Are we like Sadducees in trying to fit heaven into our image? Do we live in the joy and hope of eternal life?
- Marian retreat, day 19, per Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta: We can recognize annoyances and difficulties over God's gifts, but Teresa radiated joy amid physical and spiritual hardships by pondering God's goodness and responding with praise as Mary did and reflecting on blessings in daily examen as Ignatius of Loyola did, BAKER-style.
