June 2

June 2, 2014:  Monday, 7th Week of Easter

The Ascension/ Dosso Dossi
Readings
  • Acts 19:1-8  Paul / disciples at Ephesus:  “Did you receive the Holy Spirit?” / “We never heard of a Holy Spirit.” / “How were you baptized?” / “John's baptism.” / “John told people to repent and believe in the one coming, Jesus.”  He baptized them in Jesus' name and laid hands on them, and the Spirit came upon them.  There were about twelve.  For three months debated boldly about the Kingdom.
  • Ps 68:2-3ab, 4-5acd, 6-7ab  "Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth."  God arises; his enemies are scattered like smoke is driven away and wax melts, but the just rejoice.  God is father of orphans and defender of widows...
  • Jn 16:29-33  Disciples / Jesus:  “Now we realize you know everything and believe you came from God.” / “The hour has arrived when you'll be scattered and leave me alone, but the Father is with me.  I tell you so you might have peace in me.  You'll have trouble in the world, but take courage; I've conquered the world.”
Pope Francis
  • At "Renewal in the Spirit" convention:  Evangelization, ecumenism, care of the needy, and welcome of the marginalized are founded on renewal of adoration of God.  Charismatics have received a great gift from the Lord, but don't think yourself more important; you have one leader, the Lord Jesus.  Let the Spirit guide you, and go out to announce the Gospel.  Adore God.  Seek sanctity in the New Life of the Spirit.  Priests, be near God through adoration, and near the people.  Youths, give yourself so others may know the Lord.  The devil seeks to destroy the family; Lord, give families strength against attacks.  The sufferings of the sick and disabled are united to Christ's.  Thank you for your willingness to be united in Christ's suffering, and for your hope.

    Reflections
      • Creighton:  Trouble may bring out our giftedness; take courage!  Paul had courage but needed patience and persistence too.
      • One Bread One Body:  Jesus questioned the disciples because he knew they'd be scattered and leave him alone.  We're scattered too; our divisions make our faith questionable.  Holy Spirit, produce in me the fruit of faith.
      • Passionist:  Jesus tells the apostles they'll have peace in him.  The more we remember the Holy Spirit working in and through us, the more we'll be a people and Church of peace.
      • Universalis:  SS. Marcellinus and Peter, martyrs; Pope St. Damasus I
