July 14, 2014: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, virgin
Readings
- Is 1:10-17 Lord to Sodom and Gomorrah: I loathe your offerings and festivals. Your hands are bloody! Wash yourselves clean! Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.

- Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23 "To the upright I will show the saving power of God." Why do you profess my covenant with your mouth but cast my words behind you? I'll correct you. Those who offer a sacrifice of praise glorify me; I'll save all who go the right way.
- Mt 10:34-11:1 “I have come to bring not peace but the sword, setting family members against each other. Whoever loves family more than me or doesn't take up the cross and follow me is unworthy of me. Whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Whoever receives you receives me and the one who sent me. Whoever gives water to a disciple will be rewarded.” When Jesus finished giving these commands to his Twelve, he went to teach and preach in their towns.

*listening tips
- Creighton: Jesus wants us to carry our crosses as he carried his; he asked his Father to “take this cup away” but accepted his will. He got strength from his mother's love, assistance from Simon of Cyrene, and comfort from women of Jerusalem. He showed us not just suffering but how to accept others' love, help, and comfort.
- One Bread One Body: If "Jesus adds and multiplies; Satan subtracts and divides" (church marquee), how can the Prince of Peace say he comes not for peace but division? Satan divides to leave us broken, bitter, and alone, but Jesus divides to separate us from what keeps us from him. He wants nothing less than full communion with us. What's pulling me away?
- Passionist: Re-prioritize to surrender all. Stand firm in the face of resistance, responding to challenges with love, compassion, forgiveness, generosity, and peace. As "Jesus returned to teach and preach in their towns," may I follow him in daily life, never alone.
- DailyScripture.net: The 'sword' cuts to our core to expose sin and deception. God's word is a sword (Heb 4:12), the "Sword of the Spirit" (Eph 6:17). Great calls inevitable cause division between accepters and rejecters, even within a household (Micah 7:6). The love of God compels us to choose who's first.
- Universalis: St. Kateri Tekakwitha, virgin, “Lily of the Mohawks,” died at 24.
