- Gn 28:10-22a Jacob stopped at a shrine for the night, putting a stone from there under his head and laying down, then had a dream: a stairway reached to heaven, and God’s messengers were going up and down. The Lord said, “I am the God of your forefather Abraham and of Isaac; I'll give this land to you and your descendants. They'll be plentiful, and in you and them everyone shall find blessing. I'm with you, protecting you wherever you go.” Awaking: “The Lord is in this spot, though I didn't know! How awesome is this shrine, abode of God and gateway to heaven!” He set up the stone as a memorial stone and poured oil on it. He called the site Bethel and vowed, “If God remains with me, protects me, and gives me bread and clothing, and I come back safe to my father’s house, the Lord shall be my God.”
Raising of Jairus' daughter Veronese |
- Ps 91:1-4, 14-15ab "In you, my God, I place my trust." You who dwell in God's shelter, say to the Lord, “My refuge, my fortress, my God.” He'll rescue you from fowler and pestilence, covering you....
- Mt 9:18-26 An official knelt before Jesus: “My daughter has just died. Come and she'll live.” He and his disciples followed him. A woman suffering hemorrhages came up behind him and touched his cloak, thinking, “If I touch his cloak, I'll be cured.” He turned and saw her: “Your faith has saved you,” and she was cured. When he arrived at the official's house, he sent the crowd away: “She's asleep, not dead.” They ridiculed him. He took her by the hand, she arose, and the news spread.
Reflect
- Msgr. Albert Bahhuth homily video: Do we have faith in the face of "deaths," or try to strike a deal...?
- Creighton: We assume the “official” whose daughter had died is a Roman. Jesus goes home with him, always present to those with faith He has done. When the woman sneaks up behind him, he helps her too, in both cases revealing God's healing, saving love. Jesus doesn't wait till we have "enough" faith before he comes.
- One Bread, One Body: "The landscape of holiness": At a pagan shrine, Jacob fell asleep and dreamed he met God and received special revelation; he called the place Bethel, 'God's house.' The Lord wants us to have Bethels, places where the Lord can forgive, free, and heal, whether at home, work, school.... The Lord is present everywhere, but in some places his presence is more profound. The Lord wants us to be walking tabernacles filling the world with his saving, transforming love....
The healing of a bleeding woman |
- Name of the day: Bethel (1st reading)
- Passionist: May we reach the point where no matter what happens, we can join Jacob in saying, “The Lord is in this spot, though I didn't know it!”
- DailyScripture.net: "Take heart, your faith has made you well": Jesus gave hope where there seemed to be no cause for it because he hoped in God. He spoke words of hope to the woman to ignite her faith, and he gave hope to the father who lost his child. It took courage and risk for the ruler to go to him, but Jesus delivered the girl from death. In both cases Jesus showed personal concern for others' needs and was ready to heal and restore life. His infinite love extends to all....
